How to export your ChatGPT history

Checked against the providers’ export features in October 2026.

ChatGPT lets you download all your conversations as a ZIP file. This guide shows where to click, what you receive and how to open it in AI Vault without uploading it anywhere.

Request the export

  1. Open ChatGPT on the web and sign in.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
  3. Open Data controls and choose Export data.
  4. Confirm with Export. ChatGPT prepares the file and sends you a download link by e-mail.
  5. Open the e-mail and download the ZIP. The link expires after 24 hours, so download it soon.

Business and Enterprise workspaces

The self-service export is available for personal accounts. In Business or Enterprise workspaces exports are managed by the organisation; ask your admin.

Alternatively, OpenAI’s privacy portal (“Download my data”) produces a larger archive that contains a nested conversations ZIP. AI Vault opens one level of nested ZIP files automatically.

What the export contains

  • conversations.json — every conversation with all its messages. Since 2026 large accounts receive it split into conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json… (about 100 conversations per file).
  • chat.html — a readable copy of the same conversations.
  • user.json — your account details (e-mail and, if set, phone). AI Vault offers to add them to your privacy list so they are always detected before sharing.
  • Uploaded and generated files. Recent exports store them as file_….dat blobs with a conversation_asset_file_names.json index; older ones keep the original names.
  • Very large exports can arrive as several ZIP files (…-part-0001.zip, …-part-0002.zip). Later parts often contain only media.

Each conversation is stored as a tree: when you edited a prompt or regenerated an answer, both versions are kept. AI Vault shows them as real branches and remembers which one was visible in ChatGPT.

Open it in AI Vault

  1. Open AI Vault and choose Import.
  2. Select the ZIP file — or all parts at once if your export was split.
  3. Wait for the import report: new, updated and unchanged conversations, branches and any warnings (for example attachments referenced but not included).
  4. Browse, search and create knowledge. Use Share safely to export selected branches or sections with personal data pseudonymized.

Nothing is uploaded

The ZIP is read by your browser. Attachments are not copied into the vault; while the ZIP stays selected in the tab you can preview them.

Troubleshooting

  • No e-mail arrived: check spam and wait a little; large accounts take longer. You can request a new export.
  • “No conversation file was found”: you probably selected only a media part. Select all parts together.
  • Some attachments are “missing from export”: the export did not include them. AI Vault reports this instead of guessing.
  • Importing the same export twice is safe: duplicates are recognised by their original ids and your notes are kept.
