How to export your Gemini activity

Checked against the providers’ export features in October 2026.

Gemini does not have a single “export chats” button. Your prompts and replies are available through Google Takeout as “Gemini Apps” activity. The key step is choosing JSON instead of the default HTML.

Create the Takeout export

  1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the account you use for Gemini.
  2. Click Deselect all, then scroll to My Activity and tick it.
  3. Click All activity data included, choose Deselect all, tick only Gemini Apps and confirm.
  4. Click Multiple formats and set Activity records to JSON. This is essential: the default is HTML.
  5. Click Next step, keep “Send download link via email”, “Export once” and “.zip”, and choose Create export.
  6. When Google’s e-mail arrives, download the ZIP file(s). Large exports are split into several ZIPs.

No history?

Gemini only keeps prompts while Gemini Apps Activity is turned on. If it was off, Takeout has nothing to export for that period.

What the export contains

  • A file such as Takeout/My Activity/Gemini Apps/MyActivity.json (folder names are translated to your account language). AI Vault recognises it by its content.
  • One record per prompt, newest first, with the reply as HTML. Some prompts have no reply recorded.
  • Recent exports link each record to its chat (gemini.google.com/app/…). AI Vault uses that link to rebuild the conversation; records without it are grouped by day and labelled as such.
  • When Gemini produced several drafts, the alternatives are kept as branches.
  • There are no chat titles: AI Vault uses the first prompt of each chat.

HTML exports are not supported

If AI Vault says the activity is in HTML, repeat the export choosing JSON for “Activity records”.

Import into AI Vault

  1. Open AI Vault → Import and select the Takeout ZIP (or just MyActivity.json).
  2. Records that are not conversation turns (settings changes, feedback) are skipped and counted in the report.
  3. Explore your Gemini chats next to your ChatGPT and Claude history and search them all at once.
