How to export your Claude conversations
Checked against the providers’ export features in October 2026.
Claude can export your chats, projects and memories. Since autumn 2026 the export e-mail links to a manifest with several downloads; this guide explains which one AI Vault needs.
Request the export
- Open Claude on the web or in the desktop app (exports are not available in the mobile apps).
- Go to Settings → Privacy and choose Export data. You can pick a time range.
- Claude sends you an e-mail. The link expires after 24 hours and you must be signed in to use it.
Team and Enterprise plans
Members can export only if an owner enables it. An owner’s export can contain every member’s data — handle it with extra care.
Download the right files
Recent exports arrive as a small manifest file listing separate downloads (each link works only once): conversations-000.zip with your chats, plus projects-000.zip, memories-000.zip and others. Older exports are a single ZIP.
- For AI Vault, download conversations-000.zip (and any further
conversations-00N.zip). - If you import the manifest by mistake, AI Vault tells you which files to download instead.
- Optionally import
projects-000.ziptogether with the conversations so project names are recognised.
What you get in AI Vault
- All branches: Claude’s export includes every edited or retried version. Because the export does not mark which branch was on screen, AI Vault opens the most recent one by default.
- Rich content: thinking summaries, artifacts and tool results are kept as readable text.
- Attachments: pasted documents come with their extracted text; uploaded files are listed by name only (Claude does not export their contents).
- Your account details from
users.jsoncan be added to your privacy list in one click.
Troubleshooting
- A download link says it was already used: each manifest link works once; request a new export.
- “The format was not recognized”: make sure you imported the conversations ZIP, not the manifest or another category.
- No branch data: very old exports only contain the final messages; AI Vault shows them in exported order.
